Gul Plaza tragedy: 67 bodies recovered, 77 still missing

KARACHI: The catastrophic fire incident at Gul Plaza in Karachi has reached its final stages, with authorities raising concerns over the rapidly deteriorating condition of the building. Officials have also confirmed that no intact human remains are being recovered from the site, with only skeletal fragments now emerging from the debris.

Fire Officer Zafar Khan reported that the structural integrity of Gul Plaza is worsening with each passing day, further complicating rescue and debris removal operations. He stated that recovery efforts had ceased producing intact remains, and only bones were currently being found amidst the rubble. According to him, aside from the recovered remains, there is nothing further left to retrieve from the site.

During a press briefing in Karachi, Fire Officer Zafar Khan revealed that 67 bodies have been retrieved so far. He expressed doubts about discovering more bodies as the operation nears its conclusion. Despite this, 77 individuals remain officially listed as missing. Search teams continue their efforts, scouring the rubble for any signs of life or further remains.

After seven relentless days, authorities are intensifying efforts with hopes of concluding the search today. Rescue 1122 reported that they are working diligently to wrap up all recovery and rescue operations promptly.

Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khosa confirmed the dispatch of 67 identified bodies and remains from Gul Plaza. He expressed optimism that search efforts would be concluded within the day. The commissioner added that DNA identification processes were still being carried out on certain remains, though it appears no additional names will be included in the missing person list.
