Lahore Manhole tragedy: FIR registered, 3 arrested

LAHORE: An FIR has been registered in connection with the tragic incident in Lahore’s Bhati Gate area, where a mother and her daughter fell into an open manhole.

According to police sources, the case has been registered on the complaint of Sajid, the father of the deceased girl Sadia.

The FIR names Project Manager Asghar Sindhu, Safety Incharge Daniyal, Site Incharge, and an individual identified as Nawaz as accused in the case.

The police confirmed that the case has been registered under Section 322 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to causing death by negligence.

As stated in the FIR, the accused allegedly left the manhole uncovered, displaying gross negligence and carelessness, which led to the fatal incident.

The tragic event has once again raised serious concerns over safety lapses, lack of precautionary measures, and accountability in ongoing development projects across the city.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz condemned the Lahore administration’s failure to ensure public safety. For the first time in her tenure, she criticized senior bureaucrats on camera, labeling the event “criminal negligence.”

Decrying false reports from local authorities, she demanded swift corrective actions, including covering all open manholes at construction sites across Punjab.

She also pledged compensation of one crore rupees for the victims’ family, to be paid by the contractor. On social media platform X, she expressed sorrow over this “grievous crime,” promising justice for the lives lost and punishment for those responsible.
