WEB DESK: Three individuals sustained injuries when a homemade explosive detonated near a polling station in Bangladesh’s Gopalganj district during the country’s first general elections following a political shift led by the Gen Z generation.
The explosion occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the Reshma International School polling center in Gopalganj’s Sadar area, the hometown of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, local sources reported.
The voting process was reportedly proceeding smoothly until unidentified individuals allegedly threw a crude bomb from across a nearby canal, disrupting the atmosphere of calm.
The blast injured two Ansar security personnel—Sukanta Majumdar and Jamal Hossain—as well as a 14-year-old girl, Amina Khatun, the daughter of a voter from the Arambagh region. All three were promptly taken to a nearby clinic, where they received initial medical treatment.
The explosion also caused minor damage to the polling station’s main entrance. In response, law enforcement officials collected evidence from the site and heightened security measures at the location to ensure uninterrupted voting.
