Tensions surge as Iran energy sites attacked post Trump U-turn

TEHRAN: Tensions in the Middle East escalated again as Iran reported fresh strikes on its energy infrastructure, despite a recent shift in stance by Donald Trump regarding potential military action.

Iranian media stated that joint United States–Israel strikes targeted key gas facilities in Isfahan, including a gas administration building and a pressure regulation station. According to reports, the sites sustained partial damage. Another strike was said to have hit a gas pipeline linked to a power plant in Khorramshahr, near the Iraqi border.

The developments came shortly after Trump announced a temporary pause on attacks against Iran’s power infrastructure, citing ongoing “productive” discussions. The decision followed an earlier ultimatum tied to reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, Iranian officials denied that any negotiations were taking place.

Iran’s energy minister maintained that the country’s decentralized power generation system makes it less vulnerable to such attacks compared to regional rivals.

Meanwhile, there were no signs of de-escalation on the ground. Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on southern Beirut, targeting positions linked to Hezbollah. The strikes marked a renewed assault on the area after a brief lull, with plumes of smoke seen rising over the city.

In response, Iran launched another wave of missiles toward Israeli territory, further intensifying the conflict.

The violence has also affected neighboring Lebanon, where clashes have escalated since Hezbollah entered the conflict earlier this month. Israeli forces confirmed operations against Hezbollah infrastructure and reported detaining members of the group in southern Lebanon.

Adding to concerns, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon said its headquarters in Naqura was struck by a projectile, likely fired by a non-state actor.

Amid the ongoing conflict, the United Kingdom has moved to bolster regional defenses by deploying short-range air defense systems.

Despite brief optimism over possible diplomacy, markets remain cautious as uncertainty persists and oil prices show renewed volatility.
