KARACHI: Senior provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Saturday unveiled Sindh’s updated wheat procurement strategy, emphasizing its focus on safeguarding farmers’ interests and ensuring fair market practices.
Under the new policy, the provincial government will procure one million metric tonnes of wheat at a fixed rate of Rs 3,500 per maund. The procurement campaign is set to begin on April 1 through 109 designated centers across Sindh.
The minister stated that only farmers registered under the Hari Card system will be eligible to sell their produce, with approximately 330,000 growers expected to benefit directly from the initiative.
In a shift from previous practices, the government will not supply gunny bags. Instead, farmers will bring their own bags and receive Rs 60 per bag, which will be transferred directly into their accounts at Sindh Bank.
Sharjeel Memon stressed that the revised procurement mechanism has been designed to ensure transparency, efficiency, and to eliminate the possibility of fraud.
He further noted that the provincial government currently holds around two million tonnes of wheat in reserve, adding that the new policy will help stabilize flour prices and ensure affordable supply for consumers across the province.
