Pakistan urges ‘Constructive Engagement’ as US–Iran talks begin in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called on the United States and Iran to approach ongoing negotiations in Islamabad with a spirit of cooperation, as both sides begin critical discussions aimed at ending the Middle East conflict.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the need for meaningful dialogue, expressing hope that both parties would “engage constructively” during the talks. In an official statement, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating the process and helping both sides move toward a lasting and sustainable resolution.

While welcoming JD Vance to the capital, Dar also acknowledged Washington’s stated commitment to promoting regional and global stability, underscoring Islamabad’s role as a neutral mediator in the high-stakes negotiations.

However, signs of mistrust remain evident. Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf voiced skepticism over the process, pointing to past experiences with the United States.

According to Iranian state media, Ghalibaf said Tehran enters the talks with “good intentions” but remains wary, citing a history of unsuccessful negotiations and what he described as unfulfilled commitments by Washington.

As discussions get underway, Pakistan continues to position itself as a key diplomatic bridge, hoping to steer both sides toward a durable peace agreement despite lingering tensions and deep-rooted differences.
