Trump welcomes Iran’s decision to reopen Strait of Hormuz

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has welcomed Iran’s decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, describing the move as a positive step toward easing regional tensions after weeks of conflict.

In a message shared online, Trump confirmed that Iran had restored full access to the vital shipping route and expressed appreciation for the decision. He highlighted the importance of resuming maritime traffic through the strait, which serves as a key artery for global energy supplies.

However, he noted that certain restrictions would remain in place, including a naval blockade specifically related to Iran, until ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran are finalised.

The announcement came after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that commercial vessels would once again be allowed to pass through the strait. He added that the reopening is tied to a temporary ceasefire arrangement connected to Lebanon, under which hostilities have been paused for 10 days.

Araghchi emphasised that all ships must follow designated routes set by Iran’s maritime authorities to ensure safe and orderly transit during the truce period.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most crucial  corridors, linking the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea and carrying nearly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Its recent closure had sparked fears of a major disruption to energy markets.

Following news of its reopening, oil prices dropped by around 9%, reflecting improved expectations about supply stability. The move has provided some relief to global markets, which had been rattled by uncertainty stemming from the conflict.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund has cautioned that prolonged instability in the region could still weigh on global economic growth. Although the reopening of the strait may ease immediate pressures, the situation remains fragile, with future stability dependent on the success of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
