China backs Pakistan’s role in promoting US–Iran dialogue amid rising tensions

ISLAMABAD: China has voiced strong support for Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to help advance peace talks between the United States and Iran, as the ceasefire deadline approaches.

Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong met Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad on Tuesday, where both sides reviewed the evolving regional situation.

During the meeting, the envoy appreciated Pakistan’s continued role in encouraging engagement between Washington and Tehran, reaffirming Beijing’s backing for initiatives aimed at ensuring long-term regional peace and stability.

Dar, in turn, reiterated the strength of the Pakistan–China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, highlighting the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and stressing the need for consistent high-level exchanges.

Earlier, China also criticised recent US actions, calling the reported blockade around Iranian ports “dangerous and irresponsible.” The remarks came after Donald Trump warned that vessels attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports could face military action.

According to reports, the US imposed restrictions on maritime movement near Iranian coastal areas in the Gulf following stalled negotiations over the weekend. The move took effect despite a recently agreed two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun cautioned that increased military presence and targeted blockades risk escalating tensions, undermining the fragile truce and threatening safe navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
