WEB DESK: Iran has reportedly conveyed its response to a proposal from the United States through Pakistani intermediaries, according to Iranian state media, as diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions continue to intensify.
The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said Tehran forwarded its position on the latest US initiative via Pakistan, though officials did not reveal details of the message.
A source familiar with the ongoing negotiations stated that current discussions are primarily focused on achieving an immediate ceasefire before moving toward wider political and security arrangements. The reported proposal is aimed at preventing further escalation following weeks of heightened military tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry had confirmed that Tehran was internally reviewing the American proposals and would communicate its final decision after consultations with senior leadership.
Pakistan has increasingly taken on a mediation role in the crisis. Islamabad was previously involved in facilitating an April 8 ceasefire agreement between Tehran and Washington, which reportedly helped halt more than a month of hostilities linked to US and Israeli military operations targeting Iran.
However, subsequent talks held in Islamabad reportedly failed to secure a comprehensive breakthrough, as disagreements persisted over long-term de-escalation measures and regional security guarantees.
Diplomatic engagement continued on Sunday when Shehbaz Sharif held discussions with Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani regarding ongoing peace initiatives and regional stability efforts.
Officials said both sides emphasised the importance of dialogue and constructive diplomacy to avoid further conflict in the Middle East. Prime Minister Shehbaz also conveyed greetings to Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and expressed hope for closer bilateral cooperation ahead of the Qatari leader’s anticipated visit to Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Qatar voiced concern over rising tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
During a phone call with Abbas Araghchi, the Qatari prime minister stressed that freedom of navigation through the Strait must remain protected. According to Qatar’s foreign ministry, he warned that any attempt to use the waterway as leverage in the crisis could further destabilise the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, carrying a substantial share of global oil exports and playing a vital role in international energy markets.
