Karachi announces traffic arrangements for Muharram processions

KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police has unveiled the traffic management plan for the city during the observance of Muharram, specifically from the 8th to the 10th of Muharram 1448 AH, in connection with the Ashura processions.

A spokesperson representing the DIG Traffic Police stated that MA Jinnah Road will be closed from Guru Mandir to Tower for security purposes. The main processions on all three days will originate from Nishtar Park and conclude at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah, following traditional routes.

Residents traveling from Nazimabad are advised to take Lasbela Chowk via the Garden area to access Nishtar Road. Those coming from Liaquatabad should turn left at Teen Hatti and proceed along Martin Road.

Additionally, traffic on Liaquatabad-Guru Mandir Road will be restricted between 8:30 am and 9:30 am on Muharram 9. Motorists heading from Hasan Square towards Peoples Chowrangi are instructed to use Kashmir Road, Jail Flyover, Teen Hatti, and Nishtar Road as alternate pathways.

Traffic heading from Shahrah-e-Faisal towards Numaish Chowrangi will be diverted onto Kashmir Road at Society Light Signal. Vehicles moving from Central Jail Gate (Jamshed Road) towards MA Jinnah Road (Guru Mandir) are advised to use the route via Guru Mandir-Bahadur Yar Jung Road (Soldier Bazar).

The 9th and 10th of Muharram 1448 AH will fall on June 25 and 26 (Thursday and Friday), which have been declared as public holidays by the government in observance of Ashura, according to a notification from the Cabinet Division issued on June 22. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced these holidays.

Muharram is one of the four sacred Islamic months, with Ashura commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), during the Battle of Karbala.

Throughout Muharram, processions and religious gatherings are held across the country, with scholars delivering sermons and the faithful participating in mourning ceremonies.
