MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has achieved a significant legal victory in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The AJK High Court today annulled the Election Commission’s decision to revoke PTI’s registration and ordered the commission to immediately restore the party’s status
The verdict was delivered by a larger bench led by Chief Justice Sadaqat Hussain Raja. The petition was filed by PTI AJK President and former Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi, who challenged the Election Commission’s move to derecognize PTI as a registered political entity in the region.
For weeks, PTI candidates in AJK faced uncertainty. The invalidation of their registration meant they couldn’t file nomination papers under the party’s banner, and the iconic bat symbol was removed from the electoral process. This situation prompted many prospective candidates to consider running as independents, significantly impacting the electoral landscape.
The court rejected the Election Commission’s justification for the cancellation, stating that the decision was unlawful and infringed on fundamental political rights. In its formal order, the bench directed the Election Commission of AJK to reinstate PTI’s registration without delay and permit candidates to contest under the bat symbol in the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections.
The Election Commission has been instructed to issue an official notification and update its list of registered political parties accordingly.
This development is crucial because the bat is PTI’s most recognizable symbol. With its reinstatement, the party can once again field candidates under its traditional emblem, strengthening its electoral prospects. Political analysts in Muzaffarabad see this as a strategic advantage for PTI as election campaigns intensify across AJK.
