SIALKOT: India has once more released water from the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River, this time on Tuesday afternoon, marking the second such release within three days. This has heightened worries about increased water flow reaching Head Marala.
Sources indicate that on August 4, water was released through three spillways, surpassing the two spillways opened during the previous release earlier in the week. The surge in water release was triggered by heavy rainfall in the upper catchment regions of the Chenab, which led to rising water levels at the dam.
Following the latest release from Baglihar, authorities are concerned that downstream Salal Dam may also release additional water, potentially intensifying the flow towards Head Marala.
The Flood Forecasting Division has issued a warning that the Chenab River at Head Marala may experience low to moderate flooding within the next 24 hours. Currently, inflow at Head Marala is reported at 93,000 cusecs, with outflow at 76,000 cusecs, indicating rising water levels in the area.
