ISLAMABAD: PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan says talks between the government and opposition have made little progress, urging both sides to continue efforts to ease tensions.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Gohar said PTI founder Imran Khan had authorised Mahmood Khan Achakzai to make decisions on the party’s behalf. He added that PTI was seeking to hold its planned long march peacefully and avoid the imposition of governor’s rule or an emergency.
Gohar warned that such measures would benefit “undemocratic forces” and could undermine the National Action Plan. He said they would not resolve the long-march issue and could further worsen conditions in the province. He also called for national unity in tackling terrorism.
The remarks come amid reports that the federal government is weighing options to persuade PTI to call off its proposed march. Sources told media that if the party does not withdraw the date, the government may consider invoking Article 234 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution provide for emergency measures and other constitutional action in specified circumstances. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has also said an emergency could be imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa if constitutionally warranted.
