ISLAMABAD: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed a Rs133.18 billion agreement with the Power China–IKAN Joint Venture for the HM-1 contract of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony held at WAPDA House.

The contract covers the manufacturing, supply and installation of hydro-mechanical equipment and hydraulic steel structures required for the dam’s operations, including gates and other structures designed to regulate water flow.

The equipment will be installed at flushing tunnels on both banks of the Indus, power intakes and dam outlets. The scope of work also includes steel lining, hoisting and pumping systems, along with associated electrical works.

The Diamer-Bhasha Dam is a priority project of the federal government aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s water, food and energy security. The dam is being built across the River Indus, around 40 kilometres downstream of Chilas.

Upon completion, the project is expected to provide a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 million acre-feet (MAF) and generate 4,500 megawatts of electricity.
