PPP names seven members for electoral reforms committee

KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party has submitted seven nominees for a parliamentary committee tasked with considering electoral reforms, according to media. The names were sent to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.

The party proposed Shazia Marri, Qadir Patel, Ali Qasim Gilani, Nawabzada Iftikhar and Sadiq Memon as National Assembly members. Its Senate nominees are Zameer Ghumro and Farooq H. Naek.

The committee’s proposed balance has drawn objections from the opposition. PTI Chief Whip Amir Dogar reportedly questioned a plan that would give the government 15 members compared with five from the opposition, and urged officials to review the committee structure used from 2013 to 2018.

Meanwhile, PML-N is considering reducing its own representation to make space for coalition partners. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wants allied parties—including the PPP and MQM-P—to be represented, while seats for PML-Q, IPP and PML-Zia are also under discussion.
