Powerful 7.3 Magnitude Hits Northern Japan

TOKYO: A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook off the coast of Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures in northern Japan on Wednesday evening, triggering a tsunami advisory.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck 60 kilometers (36 miles) below the sea.

The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami that also caused a nuclear disaster.

There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to public broadcaster NHK, some 2.09 million households in the greater Tokyo area have no power due to blackouts caused by the earthquake.

The tremor hit in the ocean around the northeast of the country, meteorologists said.

It rocked large parts of eastern Japan – including Tokyo, where buildings violently shook – as it struck around 11.30pm local time (2pm GMT) on Wednesday.

People called it the “longest” and “scariest” earthquake they had ever experienced as they took to social media after it happened.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning after the tremor hit around 60km underneath the sea near Fukushima. The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami 11 years ago that also caused nuclear plant meltdowns.

The earthquake came only days after the area marked the 11th anniversary of the disaster in March 2011.
