Karachi: The Muttahida Quami Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) acting head Syed Mustafa Kamal on Thursday warned the government to solve the power crisis on an emergency basis otherwise if the government don’t listen our highlighted issues then we will call public while he also stressed on the Supreme Court to take a suo-motu notice on the matter which is insulting 200.40 million people of Pakistan.
Addressing a presser at the Pakistan house today along with Anis Qaim Khani, Amin Ul Haq, Arshad Wohra and other leaders of the party, former mayor Syed Mustafa Kamal said that the power crisis is more dangerous then the terrorism and the matter of the national security.
The ex-mayor said that a mismanagement in the power sector is a major issue.
Presently member of the National Assembly from NA-242, Syed Mustafa Kamal said that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has cost of per unit electricity is Rs 8.50 but in the bills it cost Rs 34.
The MNA from Karachi said that businessmen are saying to put names of families of the International Power Producers (IPPs) owners on the Exit Control List (ECL).
Syed Mustafa Kamal urged the Supreme Court to take a suo-motu notice on the matter. He said that might be you don’t have power of giving a verdict on the power crisis but menace of power crisis are insulting 200.40 million of Pakistanis.
He said that the decisions the government has been taken will not effect masses at all who have been target of taxes burden constantly.
He asked the Sindh government to include Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas in the solar projects.
He apprised that the power circulation debts are much larger wound for the country’s economy.
He informed that under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) the government has allocated a sum of Rs 1400 billion for development of whole of Pakistan whereas the government allocated a whopping Rs 1700 billion for payments to the power companies.
He added that previous year debt is Rs 600 billion adding the IPPs have been paid in dollars even not making the electricity.
He informed that there are 20 institutions for providing electricity in the country while 19 are governmental and one is a private entity.
Syed Mustafa Kamal said that all these institutions make profits. He apprised that they have procedure when electricity thefts and line losses come the stopped giving electricity.
He said that to prevent electricity theft they provide less electricity so that they could maintain their balance sheets.
The country has a need of electricity of 17000 MW in the winter season while they have capacity of generating 45,000 MW of electricity while the demand for summer season is 30,000 MW, he said.
There are 40 IPPs in the country which generates electricity while our need IS 30,000 MW why there is scarcity of the electricity as the country has capacity of generating 45,000 MW electricity, he adds.
He further apprised that there are load shedding of 6, 8 and 12 hours everywhere in the country.
He said that the citizens are receiving electricity bills despite long duration of load shedding.
He said that we have to pay the IPPs Rs 5250 billions while we have Rs 2600 billion circular debt which we have to pay to the power companies.
The acting MQM-P chief said that neither he held the presser to belittle someone nor to criticize any body, Syed Mustafa Kamal said.
A mismanagement in the power sector is a major issue adding the people who live here have to fix the economy of the country, he added.
He said that the people lives will be better when the country’s economy will improve.
He said that salaried class are burdened with taxes.
