Congo virus claims young life in Karachi ahead of Eid-ul-Adha

KARACHI: A 17-year-old boy has died in Karachi after contracting Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

Officials confirmed that the teenager tested positive for the virus a day earlier and was receiving treatment at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital. He was reportedly involved in livestock handling, a known risk factor for the disease.

Health experts have urged the public to exercise caution, particularly with Eid ul-Adha approaching, when interaction with animals significantly increases. Citizens are advised to wear gloves and protective clothing while handling livestock.

Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever is primarily transmitted through tick bites or contact with infected animals. It can also spread between humans through exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids.

Authorities emphasized preventive measures such as using insect repellents and maintaining hygiene. Reports indicate that several cases have emerged in Sindh this year, with multiple fatalities recorded in Karachi alone, raising concerns among health officials.
