Former Qatari Ameer Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passes away at 74; Leaders express condolences

DOHA: Qatar’s former Ameer, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has passed away at the age of 74, according to an announcement from the country’s Ameeri Diwan, the official government council, on Sunday.

Sheikh Hamad led Qatar from 1995 until his abdication in 2013, when he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim, the current Ameer.

The Ameeri Diwan issued a statement mourning his death, saying, “May Allah have mercy on his soul and reward him for his service to Qatar and his contributions to the nation.”

During his reign, Sheikh Hamad significantly elevated Qatar’s international stature, notably through the creation of the Al Jazeera media network and by successfully securing the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Although Qatar is a small nation with a population of over 2.5 million, it has emerged as a major global player — being the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, a prominent investor, and a key diplomatic actor in the Middle East.

In June 2013, Sheikh Hamad peacefully handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over Sheikh Hamad’s demise, describing him as a visionary leader and statesman. In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister highlighted Sheikh Hamad’s wisdom, foresight, and dedication, which transformed Qatar into a prosperous and influential nation on the world stage.

He paid tribute to the late Ameer’s lasting contributions toward Qatar’s development, regional stability, and international cooperation, emphasizing that his legacy would endure for generations.

PM Shehbaz conveyed heartfelt condolences to Qatar’s Ameer, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and to the entire Qatari leadership and people, reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity during this difficult time.

He recalled Sheikh Hamad’s warmth, kindness, and his fondness for Pakistan, citing his numerous visits to the country as cherished memories.

Praying for Allah’s mercy, the Prime Minister asked that Sheikh Hamad be granted a place in Jannah and that Qatar’s royal family and citizens find patience and strength to cope with their loss.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also expressed his condolences, describing Sheikh Hamad as a pivotal figure in Qatar’s modern development and a key supporter of regional peace.

In a statement on X, Dar acknowledged the late leader’s role in strengthening Pakistan-Qatar relations and praised his visionary leadership. He extended sympathies to the Al Thani family, the Qatari government, and the people of Qatar, praying that Allah grants the departed the highest ranks in Jannah and provides the bereaved with patience.
