ICC Reprimands Pakistan for Slow Over-Rate in Women’s T20 World Cup Opener

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sanctioned Pakistan for a slow over-rate during their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

According to the ICC, Pakistan were found to be one over short of the required rate after time allowances were taken into account. As a result, the team received a fine of five per cent of their match fees, with the penalty imposed by ICC International Panel Match Referee Trudy Anderson.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over they fail to complete within the allotted time.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana accepted the charge, which was levelled by on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Jacquline Williams, along with third umpire Eloise Sheridan and fourth umpire Sue Redfern, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The disciplinary action capped a disappointing outing for Pakistan, who suffered a comprehensive 64-run defeat against their traditional rivals.

After electing to bat first, India posted a challenging total of 170/6 in 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana anchored the innings with a well-crafted half-century, while wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh added a brisk 34 runs in the closing stages.

Pakistan’s batting struggled in reply and the side was dismissed for 106 in 17 overs. Opener Muneeba Ali fought with a 41-run innings, but received little support as only Aliya Riaz (18), Gull Feroza (12), and Ayesha Zafar (12) managed double-digit scores.

India’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Deepti Sharma, who claimed an impressive five-wicket haul.
