In today’s parliamentary session for the presidential election, 99 out of 128 members of the Lebanese Parliament voted in favor of General Joseph Aoun.
General Aoun had failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the first round of voting.
It is important to note that the term of former President Michel Aoun ended in October 2022, leaving the presidency vacant since then.
Hezbollah-backed presidential candidate Suleiman Frangieh had withdrawn his candidacy in favor of Joseph Aoun yesterday.
General Joseph Aoun, 60, assumed command of the Lebanese Army in March 2017. After his election as president, he addressed the Parliament, stating that he would work to improve relations with Arab countries. He mentioned that Lebanon currently has a historic opportunity to restore ties with Syria. Joseph Aoun also pledged to rebuild the areas of southern Lebanon and the suburbs of Beirut that were devastated due to Israeli attacks.
