ABU DHABI: New family laws have been announced for residents of the United Arab Emirates.
The new family laws will apply to both Emirati and foreign families.
Under the new family laws, legal action will be taken against the misuse of Emirati children’s national IDs and passports. Violating family laws may result in fines and imprisonment.
Penalties will be imposed for violations related to child custody laws, and the new laws also extend the age for child custody.
The new family laws grant non-Muslim mothers the right to custody of their children, and children aged 15 and above will have the right to decide which parent they wish to live with.
The new family law of the UAE will come into effect in April 2025.
