Pakistan Army, Rangers sent to Punjab for Muharram Security measures

LAHORE: The federal government has given the green light for the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel throughout Punjab, following a request from the provincial authorities, to ensure security during Muharram processions.

The forces are scheduled to arrive in all districts by the evening of 8th Muharram. A coordinated flag march involving police, army, and Rangers will take place in Lahore as part of comprehensive security arrangements. Their primary role will be to assist law enforcement agencies, especially on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, to uphold law and order during the religious observances.

All deployed personnel will operate under the supervision of district Deputy Commissioners, coordinating closely with local authorities. The Punjab government formally requested the services of these security forces through a letter sent to the Ministry of Interior, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security during Muharram events.

The request was based on the current security climate and the necessity of establishing a robust, foolproof security framework to prevent any threats from terrorists or other disruptive elements. The decision was made on the recommendation of the Provincial Police Chief and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab.

A spokesperson from the Punjab Home Department stated that the province has sought a total of 137 companies of security forces, comprising 61 companies from the Pakistan Army and 76 from the Rangers, to be deployed across 39 districts to ensure a safe and peaceful Muharram.
