ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran have agreed to address outstanding issues affecting cross-border trade and transportation, while also exploring ways to strengthen economic and connectivity links between the two neighbouring countries.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between a visiting Iranian delegation, led by Transport Minister Farzana Sadiq, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan.
The Pakistani side included Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, and Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, along with senior officials from relevant departments.
During the discussions, Abdul Aleem Khan welcomed recent developments aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region, noting that stronger bilateral cooperation would help unlock new opportunities for trade and investment.
He emphasized the importance of expanding road and railway connectivity between Pakistan and Iran, saying improved transport infrastructure would facilitate smoother movement of goods and increase commercial activity on both sides of the border.
The two delegations reviewed a range of proposals related to transport and logistics and agreed to reactivate the Pakistan-Iran Joint Transport Committee to accelerate cooperation and resolve pending issues.
Aleem Khan said practical steps would be taken to address transport-related challenges and ensure smoother cross-border operations in the near future.
Speaking on the occasion, Iranian Transport Minister Farzana Sadiq thanked Pakistan for its constructive efforts in promoting regional peace and supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending conflict.
She praised the cooperation extended by Pakistan and expressed appreciation for the support shown by the Pakistani government and people.
The Iranian minister also highlighted concerns regarding the movement and clearance of trucks and cargo containers between the two countries, stressing the need for more efficient border procedures.
Officials from both sides agreed to work jointly on measures aimed at improving trade facilitation, easing transportation bottlenecks, and strengthening bilateral economic ties through enhanced border management and connectivity.
