PM reiterates Pakistan’s dedication to collaborating with the UN

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to collaborate closely with the United Nations and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to bolster global humanitarian efforts, improve disaster readiness, and assist vulnerable populations impacted by conflicts and natural calamities.

He expressed these sentiments during a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, who paid a courtesy visit to Islamabad today.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the vital humanitarian initiatives carried out by OCHA in addressing complex emergencies worldwide. He specifically highlighted Pakistan’s appreciation for the UN’s ongoing support, especially during the catastrophic floods of 2022.

Shehbaz Sharif also thanked the UN for aiding Pakistan in refining its disaster response capabilities. He pointed out that Pakistan’s federal and provincial disaster management agencies have made notable progress in enhancing their ability to tackle climate-induced crises.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that the rising frequency and severity of climate-related disasters necessitate increased preparedness, resilience-building, and strengthened coordination across national, regional, and international levels.

In response, Tom Fletcher commended the Prime Minister’s openness and expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s longstanding partnership with OCHA. He praised Pakistan’s efforts to foster regional peace and stability, noting that lasting peace is fundamental to mitigating the humanitarian and economic fallout of ongoing conflicts.

During the discussion, Fletcher briefed Shehbaz Sharif on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the difficulties faced by OCHA in providing urgent aid to those affected. He also appreciated Pakistan’s continued assistance to humanitarian operations in Afghanistan.

Attending the meeting were Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr. Syed Tauqir Shah, NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, along with other senior officials.
