WASHINGTON: Ukraine and the United States have finalized an agreement to enhance cooperation by granting Washington access to key rare minerals and supporting reconstruction initiatives in Ukraine, which has been heavily affected by ongoing conflict.
The deal was signed in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday after months of complex negotiations, with last-minute discussions addressing potential changes to certain provisions.
This agreement signifies a significant improvement in US-Ukraine relations, which had experienced tensions following a high-profile dispute between then-U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their White House meeting in February.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the establishment of the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund as a major outcome of the deal.
He emphasized that, this initiative sends a clear message to Russia of the United States’ long-term commitment to a peaceful, independent, and prosperous Ukraine.
Bessent highlighted that, President Trump’s vision for this partnership reflects the mutual dedication of both nations to lasting peace and stability in Ukraine, reinforcing their strategic alliance and support for the country’s sovereignty.
