Climate change is a Global threat, Maryam Nawaz

WEB DESK: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted the pressing issue of climate change, calling it a significant global threat. Measures such as using drones to monitor forests and implementing practical initiatives to safeguard wildlife and natural resources are being undertaken.

Speaking at the COP30 conference, she emphasized that Punjab, known as the land of five rivers, is facing an existential challenge due to climate change. She stressed the need for collective efforts to combat this crisis, noting that Pakistan is among the top ten countries most affected by climate change. She also referenced the devastating floods faced by Pakistan as a result of this phenomenon.

The chief minister shared that 2.6 million flood victims were rescued and that widespread damage occurred, affecting vast agricultural areas. She noted that pollution-causing industries and kilns in Punjab are under strict surveillance to mitigate their impact. Timely information played a critical role in enabling large-scale relief operations during the disaster.

Maryam Nawaz pointed out Punjab’s learnings from these natural calamities and reiterated that environmental pollution knows no boundaries. To address these challenges, farmers were provided with super seeds to discourage crop residue burning. A focused afforestation drive is underway, in line with the vision for a “Green and Digital Punjab.” Efforts to promote electric vehicles and bikes are also actively being pursued.
