KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) has reignited its longstanding call for the creation of a new province in Sindh, just ahead of potential constitutional amendments under the 28th Amendment. The party announced plans for public mobilization and legal efforts to ensure the constitutional rights of Sindh’s urban residents are protected.
During a press conference in Karachi with senior party leaders, MQM-P convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui warned that if the government and judiciary do not deliver justice, the party is prepared to escalate its protests to the streets.
Discussions related to the 28th Amendment are ongoing, with Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah stating that the legislation will be introduced once a consensus is reached. He mentioned that the amendment would focus on local government reforms, the National Finance Commission (NFC), and health policies.
Addressing reporters, Siddiqui also serving as the federal Education Minister emphasized that the demand for a new province is not exclusive to MQM-P but a constitutional necessity, citing Article 239, which permits the formation of new provinces and districts.”A new province is an administrative requirement it must expand with the growing population. This is a constitutional obligation, not just MQM-P’s stance,” he asserted.
He also emphasized that Karachi’s long-standing grievances must be addressed, criticizing what he called a “feudal democracy” where those contributing the most are denied political authority. He questioned Karachi’s population figures and what the city receives in return, warning that the city’s future is being threatened, with its master plan being marred by corruption.
Siddiqui further challenged opponents of creating a new province in Sindh, asking if they have similar objections to the division of Punjab. “Has any minister opposed the splitting of Punjab? The Punjab Assembly has already presented Article 140-A,” he pointed out, highlighting the inconsistency in opposition to provincial reorganization.
