NDMA issues alert as rain, snowfall forecast across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted widespread rain and snowfall in several regions of the country, with the spell expected to continue until December 18.

According to the forecast, Islamabad and adjoining areas will remain under cloudy skies from today, with occasional rainfall likely over the coming days. Similar conditions are expected in Murree, Galiyat and nearby hill stations, where rain and snowfall could disrupt routine activities and travel plans.

A western weather system is set to affect northern and northwestern parts of Pakistan between December 13 and 15. This system is likely to bring rain and snowfall to upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Kohistan, as well as different areas of Gilgit-Baltistan. Authorities have warned that heavy snowfall in mountainous regions of upper KP and Kohistan could lead to road closures and travel difficulties.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, plains are expected to receive rainfall, while hilly and mountainous areas may experience moderate to heavy snowfall. Upper parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and mountainous regions of AJK could also see intense snowfall, potentially affecting road links and daily life.

Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat and surrounding northwestern districts, is likely to witness light rainfall, with snowfall expected in higher-altitude areas. While plains may receive light to moderate rain, snowfall will continue intermittently in elevated and northern locations.

In response to the forecast, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory to safeguard the public. The authority cautioned that slippery roads in hilly regions could disrupt traffic and result in temporary closures.

The NDMA has advised tourists and travellers to avoid non-essential journeys to mountainous areas during this period. Local administrations have been urged to stay alert, while citizens are encouraged to monitor weather updates and take precautionary measures to reduce risks linked to severe weather conditions.
