KARACHI: The Sindh police have announced a targeted campaign to combat the use of illegal number plates, which are increasingly being used in Karachi to dodge e-challans.
During a press conference, Additional Inspector General Javed Alam Odho revealed that the crackdown will commence on December 19, with authorities planning to seize vehicles displaying fake or unauthorized number plates.
Odho emphasized that this initiative is a joint effort with the Excise Department, with officers deployed along key highways to intercept and take action against violators. Cases will be registered against offenders found using such plates.
He also highlighted recent traffic management improvements, citing the successful rollout of the e-ticking system, which has issued over 100,000 electronic challans for various violations. The Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS), launched on October 27, aims to replace manual ticketing with an AI-powered, automated system utilizing CCTV cameras to detect violations like speeding, red-light jumping, and helmet non-compliance.
Despite its successes, the new system has faced criticism due to inadequate infrastructure and facilities in Karachi, raising concerns about its effective implementation.
