WEB DESK: Two explosions and a fire, likely from a gas leak, struck a nursing home near Philadelphia on Tuesday, killing two people and sparking a search for victims in the building’s collapsed section. Five others were initially reported missing following the incident at Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol Township, 21 miles northeast of Philadelphia, according to Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito.
Several survivors, including patients and staff, were rescued from the destroyed portion of the building. Emergency services received reports of the explosion shortly after 2:00 pm EST. Responding firefighters encountered a significant structural collapse where part of the first floor had fallen into the basement.
Multiple victims were pulled from debris, blocked stairwells, and elevators. Firefighters entering the collapsed basement rescued at least two more individuals before withdrawing due to lingering gas fumes. Moments after their exit, another explosion triggered a fire.
Part of the structure’s front was blown out, though most of the building remained standing with shattered windows. News footage showed intense flames and smoke rising from the site post-blast.
The nursing home, certified for up to 174 beds, typically housed more than 50 residents aged 50 to 95, according to reports.
Bystanders assisted emergency crews during initial evacuations. Governor Josh Shapiro praised community efforts, calling it “neighbors helping neighbors in a moment of need.” The operation remained a rescue mission hours later, as heavy equipment was brought in to clear rubble.
