Three Pakistan Army Personnel martyred in avalanche at Burzil Pass

RAWALPINDI: Three members of the Pakistan Army, including a young captain, lost their lives after an avalanche hit Burzil Pass, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed.

According to the military’s media wing, a snow clearance operation was underway during the night of 2–3 January 2026 to reopen Burzil Pass for the movement of troops. Heavy machinery was being used to clear the route under harsh weather conditions.

The operation was supervised by Captain Asmad, 28, a resident of Lahore. At approximately 2:00 am on 3 January, a sudden snow slide occurred, trapping Captain Asmad, two soldiers, and a civilian machinery operator from the Public Works Department.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly and managed to pull all four individuals out from under the snow. However, Captain Asmad, Sepoy Rizwan (32, from Attock), and machine operator Essa (from Astore) later succumbed to their injuries. One soldier survived.

ISPR stated that the fallen personnel made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out a critical mission in extremely challenging conditions. Their dedication, courage, and sense of duty reflect the unwavering commitment of Pakistan’s armed forces to safeguarding the country.

Army Major Martyred in Bajaur Intelligence-Based Operation

In a separate incident, a Pakistan Army officer was martyred during an intelligence-based operation in Bajaur’s Khar area, where security forces eliminated five militants, ISPR reported.

The operation took place on 29 December 2025 following reports of the presence of militants linked to the Indian-backed group Fitna al Khawarij. During the engagement, troops successfully neutralized five militants after an exchange of fire.

During the operation, Major Adeel Zaman, 36, from Dera Ismail Khan, was martyred while leading his troops from the front. ISPR described him as a courageous officer who fought bravely until his last moments.

Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, who were involved in multiple attacks against security personnel, law enforcement agencies, and civilians.
