US magazine endorses Pakistan’s Position on India’s Indus waters treaty violations

WEB DESK: A leading American magazine has expressed strong support for Pakistan’s stance on India’s recent actions related to the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that New Delhi’s approach could destabilize South Asia.

In an analysis published by The National Interest, the journal states that India’s reported move to suspend the treaty has reshaped regional water politics and introduced new risks of conflict. The publication cautions that undermining the decades-old agreement would intensify tensions in an already volatile region.

The magazine identifies India’s Dulhasti Stage-II hydropower project as inconsistent with the treaty framework, arguing that such initiatives signal a broader effort to use water as a tool of strategic pressure. It notes that turning water into leverage could deepen the region’s existing water scarcity and create a severe humanitarian challenge.

The National Interest also raises concerns over India’s decision to halt the sharing of hydrological data, describing it as a breach of international legal obligations. The journal recalls that international arbitration bodies have clearly ruled that the Indus Waters Treaty cannot be suspended or altered unilaterally.

Emphasizing the treaty’s importance, the magazine describes it as a critical pillar of food security in South Asia. It stresses that India remains legally obligated to allow Pakistan access to water from the western rivers under international law.

The analysis concludes that any attempt to weaponize water resources is unacceptable under international legal norms and would invite scrutiny from global courts, while further undermining regional peace and stability.
