WEB DESK: Spain has chosen not to participate in the Board of Peace initiative proposed by US President Donald Trump, aimed at addressing global conflicts. This decision aligns with Spain’s steadfast support for multilateralism and reliance on the United Nations framework.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the country’s refusal during a media briefing on Thursday evening following an EU summit in Brussels. “We value the invitation but have chosen not to accept,” Sanchez stated.
The initiative, as explained by Washington, is designed to mediate and oversee ceasefires, establish security measures, and coordinate post-war reconstruction in conflict zones. Its origins can be traced back to Trump’s peace strategy for Gaza.
However, notable absences at the Board of Peace’s inaugural event, held during Thursday’s World Economic Forum in Davos, included longstanding US allies like Canada, the United Kingdom, and all EU nations apart from Hungary and Bulgaria.
Sanchez indicated that Spain’s decision was motivated by adherence to international law, United Nations principles, and devotion to multilateral dialogue. Additionally, he pointed out that the initiative does not involve the Palestinian Authority, another factor influencing Spain’s stance.
While Israel plays an active role in the board, it is joined by Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
