Gunmen open fire at soccer field in Mexico, killing at least 11

WEB DESK: A group of armed assailants opened fire at a soccer field in the Mexican city of Salamanca, killing 11 people and injuring 12 others following a match, according to Mayor Cesar Prieto’s statement on Facebook on Sunday. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Among the injured were a woman and a child, with the incident taking place during a community gathering in Loma de Flores. Prieto condemned the attack as a “regrettable and cowardly act,” highlighting it as a stark example of the severe social challenges facing the area.

He noted that this tragedy is part of a broader wave of violence plaguing the state of Guanajuato and Salamanca in particular. Prieto accused criminal groups of attempting to overpower local authorities, affirming their efforts will not succeed.

The state attorney general’s office has launched an investigation into the shooting. Officials are now working in tandem with municipal, state, and federal entities to bolster security, safeguard residents, and identify those responsible for the attack. A statement from the office reiterated its commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Prieto emphasized on Facebook that those behind the violence will be held accountable. Guanajuato continues to be one of Mexico’s most dangerous regions, underscoring the challenges in maintaining peace and security within the area.
