PM Shehbaz to attend Gaza Board of Peace meeting in Washington

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will attend the inaugural meeting of the Gaza Board of Peace in Washington on February 19, led by US President Donald Trump. Member states are expected to participate to discuss Gaza’s situation, peace strategies, and future plans.

Before Washington, Sharif will visit Germany from February 13 to 15 for the Munich Security Conference. He will then proceed directly to the peace board meeting.

Muslim countries on the board plan to present a united stance. Pakistan joined this US-led initiative, focused on stabilizing Gaza, providing aid, and coordinating reconstruction, following an invitation from Donald Trump. The Pakistani government has clarified its participation is unrelated to the Abraham Accords and maintains its opposition to normalization agreements tied to them.

Alongside Pakistan, seven Muslim nations—Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Indonesia, and Qatar—are part of the initiative. Officials describe it as a collaborative effort for peace in Gaza, a region marred by conflict.

Announced at the Davos World Economic Forum, the initiative has drawn mixed reactions. Critics in Pakistan warn of potential entanglements in US-driven geopolitical agendas despite its intent to complement UN efforts.
