Driver freed after fatal DHA crash as family defers legal action

KARACHI: Authorities on Tuesday released a motorist involved in a deadly traffic accident in the Defence Housing Authority area after the victim’s family chose not to immediately pursue legal proceedings.

The incident occurred near the Saba Avenue signal in DHA, where 26-year-old Farhan Ali, a delivery rider, lost his life. According to widely circulated videos on social media, the rider was stationary on his motorcycle outside a residence when a fast-moving car lost control, overturned, and struck him. He died on the spot.

Police officials confirmed that the driver, identified as Hasan Banghwar, was taken into custody after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. South DIG Syed Asad Raza stated that the suspect was brought to Sahil police station for legal formalities but was later released on personal surety after discussions with the deceased’s parents.

Sahil SHO Hikmatullah explained that officers had requested the victim’s family to record a statement to register a First Information Report (FIR). However, the family informed police that they were transporting the body to Thatta for burial and would decide on further legal steps afterward.

Police have impounded both the car and the motorcycle involved in the collision. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and formal charges will depend on whether the family opts to proceed with the case.
