ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a proposal to provide electric motorcycles to government employees up to BPS-16 through easy installment plans, as part of Pakistan’s push toward wider electric vehicle adoption.
The proposal was shared during a high-level meeting in Islamabad focused on speeding up the country’s transition to electric transport.
During the session, officials informed the premier that the government is targeting conversion of 30 percent of vehicles nationwide to electric power over the next five years, a move expected to save nearly $4.5 billion in fuel imports.
Shehbaz Sharif directed concerned authorities to accelerate measures promoting EV use, saying the shift to electric transport is essential to reduce import dependence, meet future energy demands and support environmental protection. He also linked the initiative to strengthening Pakistan’s long-term energy security.
The prime minister emphasized transparent distribution of subsidies under the National Electric Vehicle Policy and instructed departments to expedite implementation of the electric bike scheme.
Officials told the meeting that 72 licenses have so far been issued for manufacturing electric bikes and rickshaws, while four licenses have been granted for electric cars. Meanwhile, 123 applications have been received for establishing EV charging stations across the country.
