Tribal elder among three killed in Wana IED explosion

WANA: At least three people, including prominent tribal leader Malik Tariq Wazir, were killed and four others injured in a roadside blast in South Waziristan’s Wana area on Monday, police said.

The explosion occurred in the crowded Rustam Bazaar near Gulshan Plaza when the vehicle of Malik Tariq Wazir chief of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe  was passing through the market.

District Police Officer Mohammad Tahir Shah Wazir said the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted overnight by unidentified militants. The device detonated during the morning hours, killing three individuals at the scene and injuring several others.

Security forces immediately sealed off the area following the attack and launched a search operation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Residents and rescue teams rushed the victims to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana, where the injured are receiving treatment while legal formalities are being completed.

The incident highlights the worsening security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant violence and terrorist attacks have surged in recent years, particularly since 2021.
