KARACHI: The Sindh government has given the green light for the acquisition of 500 new electric buses through a public-private partnership, aimed at enhancing the province’s public transportation system.
This announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon during a session of the Sindh Assembly. The statement came in response to concerns raised by MQM-Pakistan member Naseer Ahmed, who pointed out the inadequate public transport facilities in Karachi’s Manghopir area and called for improved transit services for local residents.
In reply, Minister Memon emphasized that the provincial government is actively working to expand the transport infrastructure. He revealed plans to introduce new bus services in Orangi, Banaras, and several other neighborhoods across Karachi.
The minister also outlined plans to implement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on three additional routes. He stated that overall, the bus network in Sindh is being broadened, with efforts underway to address the transportation gaps highlighted by members.
Furthermore, Memon informed the assembly that new routes have been launched in Tando Allah Yar, Khairpur, and Rohri. A new route in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar has also been made operational to improve connectivity in the area.
In a separate discussion, MQM-P lawmaker Maaz Mehboob raised concerns about the widespread illegal sale of gutka and narcotics in various parts of Karachi, including his own constituency. He claimed that such activities are often conducted with police tacit approval, and urged Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar to visit his constituency to investigate the matter.
