PM Shehbaz Sharif, President Pezeshkian hold first phone call after Islamabad peace accord

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian engaged in their inaugural telephone discussion on Thursday, lasting over half an hour, following the signing of the Islamabad Peace Agreement between the United States and Iran, the Prime Minister’s Office announced.

This marked the first direct communication between the two leaders since the historic accord was signed. During the call, PM Shehbaz extended his congratulations to President Pezeshkian, Iran’s leadership, and its people on reaching this significant milestone. “This peace agreement is a positive step towards regional stability. It will contribute to Iran’s reconstruction efforts and bolster Pakistan-Iran ties,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister also conveyed his respect and best wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei. He praised Tehran’s decision to sign the agreement and expressed hope for success in Iran’s upcoming negotiations.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s support, PM Shehbaz assured Iran of continued friendly relations and assistance. President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s role in mediating the process, praising PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their diplomatic skill and wisdom. 

He highlighted Iran’s appreciation for Pakistan’s constructive and sincere support during challenging times and expressed a desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The two leaders agreed to plan visits to each other’s capitals soon at mutually convenient times. They also committed to deepening cooperation on bilateral and regional issues and maintaining close communication in the future, as stated by the Prime Minister’s Office.
