SHC orders interior ministry to withdraw letter regarding closure of X

Karachi: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday ordered the Interior Ministry to withdraw its letter regarding closure of social media site X.

The SHC Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbassi heard the petition regarding closure of internet and social media site X.

The petitioner counsel apprised the court the interior ministry had admitted that social media site X was closed but apprised about the reason behind its closure.

The CJ asked that on what caused closure of the X? to which, Additional Attorney General apprised that the X was functional yesterday, then Judge asked is it functional today or not? to which he said “I take instructions whether it is operational today or not?”

The Additional Attorney General read the notification of the interior ministry over its closure after which, the petitioner counsel said that on the false news social media app can be fined up to Rs 500 million adding that before closing the social media service providers are informed while he said that 50 million people use the X.

The Additional Attorney General said that he is being given time to take instructions to which the court asked why did only X was shut? Judge in his conversations with the Attorney General asked you have to run the country and you know the ground realities and you also know the country interests adding some things run out of the hands and no one has advantage of it.

The Honorable CJ further said that the court is what for? it for the people adding that if people are here then we are also here.

We feel ashamed sitting on the such positions adding that the country interests and following of the constitution are vital.He said that world smiles on us over the closure of the internet.

The CJ remarked that if the letter were not withdrawn then the court would issue its order.

The court also instructed the interior ministry to present reasons behind the closure of the X till May 9.
