Security tightened as arrangements finalised for PTI founder’s transfer to hospital

ISLAMABAD: Security and administrative arrangements have been completed for the expected transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment.

According to sources, Imran Khan is likely to be accommodated in the hospital’s executive block, where a special medical board comprising senior doctors will oversee his treatment. The board is expected to include specialists in cardiology, gastroenterology and general medicine.

An ophthalmologist, general surgeon and dentist are also expected to examine the PTI founder. Sources said several medical tests, including liver function, cardiac and blood sugar examinations, are likely to be conducted after his transfer.

Meanwhile, Islamabad Inspector General of Police and other senior police officials reached Shifa International Hospital to review the security plan. Senior officers briefed the police chief on arrangements being put in place for the high-profile transfer.

As part of the security measures, vehicles parked outside the hospital are being removed through lifters, while the federal police have been placed on high alert. A portion of the hospital is also expected to be designated as a sub-jail during Imran Khan’s stay.

Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan also arrived at Adiala Jail, where his cousin Qasim Khan was already present. Police, however, stopped Aleema Khan at the jail entrance.

The developments follow the Supreme Court’s order, issued two days earlier, directing the transfer of the PTI founder to Shifa International Hospital on medical grounds.

A three-member bench had ordered that Imran Khan remain under treatment at the private hospital until the next hearing on September 16. The court also allowed his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, to stay with him, while family members were permitted to meet him once a week.

During the hearing, the apex court raised concerns regarding treatment expenses and the confidentiality of medical reports. Imran Khan’s counsel informed the court that his family would bear the medical costs, while Barrister Salman Akram Raja assured the bench that the reports would not be used for political purposes.
