ISLAMABAD: Pakistan strongly denounced Indian Interior Minister’s assertion that the Indus Waters Treaty will never be reinstated, describing it as a blatant disregard for the integrity of international agreements.
The Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson emphasized that the treaty is an internationally recognized legal framework that does not allow for unilateral termination or suspension. India’s move to put the treaty on hold is considered a direct breach of international law, treaty obligations, and diplomatic norms.
“The Indus Waters Treaty is a binding international accord, not a mere political arrangement. India’s unilateral decision to suspend it is a clear violation of both international legal standards and the treaty’s provisions, as well as the fundamental principles of interstate relations,” the foreign office stated. The statement further warned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent, damaging the credibility of international agreements and raising concerns about the trustworthiness of a state that refuses to honor its legal commitments.
Additionally, Pakistan condemned the politicization of water resources, calling it irresponsible and inconsistent with accepted norms of responsible state conduct.
Pakistan urged India to immediately withdraw its unilateral stance and fully implement the treaty without delay. The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its lawful rights and interests under the treaty, and said it would take all necessary measures to do so.
