Pakistan receives two LNG shipments from Qatar within a week

KARACHI: Over the past week, Pakistan has received two liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from Qatar, with two LNG tankers arriving at Port Qasim.

The first vessel, MV Al Kharaitiyat, reached Port Qasim on Wednesday, carrying more than 95,000 tons of LNG supplied by Qatar. Shortly after, the Mihzem, another Qatari LNG tanker, docked at the port with approximately 56,573 metric tons of LNG.

Sources familiar with the arrangements confirmed that these LNG supplies are part of a government-to-government agreement between Pakistan and Qatar. Additionally, reports indicate that two more tankers laden with Qatari LNG are expected to arrive in Pakistan in the coming days.

Pakistan is also in discussions with Iran to facilitate the transit of a limited number of LNG tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as part of its efforts to alleviate the ongoing gas shortage. A source briefed on these negotiations told Reuters on May 9 that Iran has agreed to assist, and efforts are underway to ensure the safe passage of the first vessel carrying gas under Pakistan’s agreement with Qatar.

Qatar ranks as the world’s second-largest exporter of LNG, with the majority of its shipments delivered to markets across Asia.
