Rohit Sharma announces retirement from test cricket

WEB DESK: India’s men’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday, concluding a distinguished 12-year career in the red-ball format. Over the course of his Test tenure, Sharma played 67 matches, scored 12 centuries, and served as one of India’s most successful Test captains.

The 38-year-old shared his decision on Instagram, expressing his gratitude to fans and teammates: “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all of the love and support over the years,” accompanied by a photo of his Test cap.

Despite stepping away from Test cricket, Sharma will continue to lead India in One Day Internationals (ODIs), having recently steered the team to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also previously stepped back from T20 internationals following India’s triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Reports earlier this week indicated that Sharma was expected to be replaced as Test captain ahead of the upcoming summer series in England. His decision to retire from Tests is believed to be a proactive move, possibly to avoid a leadership change.
