KARACHI: A subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on National Heritage has proposed reopening Mazar-e-Quaid to the public while urging authorities to strengthen security and improve the management of the country’s national mausoleum.
The committee met under the chairmanship of Waqar Mehdi, who, along with Bushra Anjum, briefed reporters after the session.
Senator Mehdi said another meeting with the Mazar-e-Quaid Management Board would be held within the next 15 days to assess progress on the committee’s recommendations.
Describing Mazar-e-Quaid as a symbol of Pakistan, he stressed the need to further improve its administration, visitor facilities, and overall management, calling on all concerned institutions to contribute to the effort.
He noted that the mausoleum has remained closed to the public for the past three to four years due to security concerns and expressed optimism that it could soon reopen once the necessary safety measures are put in place.
The senator also announced the formation of a committee tasked with reviewing existing security arrangements and proposing practical steps to allow public access without compromising safety.
Senator Bushra Anjum said initiatives were also underway to enhance the beauty and upkeep of the national monument. She urged the media to promote its historical significance and supported reopening Mazar-e-Quaid for visitors as soon as possible.
