Trump uses backchannel talks with Sara Netanyahu

WEB DESK: Donald Trump reportedly engaged in backchannel diplomacy by meeting with Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The discussion was aimed at advancing efforts toward an Israel–Hamas ceasefire and securing the release of hostages before Trump’s return to office.

Since then, relations between Trump and Netanyahu have faced public strains, particularly over the conflict involving Israel and Lebanon. Reports indicate that Trump strongly pressured Netanyahu to curb Israeli military operations in Beirut, including a heated phone call in which he expressed frustration over continued strikes. Despite these disagreements, both leaders have emphasized that their overall relationship remains strong.

The tensions emerge as the United States seeks broader regional de-escalation, including ceasefire arrangements and renewed diplomatic engagement with Iran. Tehran has warned that Israeli actions in Lebanon could jeopardize ongoing discussions with Washington, complicating Trump’s efforts to reduce regional conflict and avoid deeper US involvement.

When questioned about reports that he had harshly criticized Netanyahu during a private call, Trump acknowledged being frustrated but denied being deeply angry. He stated that he works well with Netanyahu and continues to value their relationship. Netanyahu similarly downplayed any rift, describing their differences as temporary tactical disagreements between close allies.

Analysts note that while both leaders share the objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, their approaches do not always align. Israel remains committed to targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, whereas US diplomatic efforts have focused on maintaining momentum in negotiations with Iran. These policy differences have contributed to occasional friction between Washington and Jerusalem.

The debate occurs against a backdrop of shifting American public opinion. Recent polling suggests that unfavorable views of Israel among Americans have increased significantly since the outbreak of the Israel–Hamas war in 2023, creating additional political pressures for US policymakers.
