Warning: new android malware can empty your bank account

KARACHI:  If you own an Android smartphone, it’s crucial to stay vigilant now. Cybersecurity experts have identified a dangerous new malware called RedHook that can take over your device completely and potentially drain your bank balance.

According to THN, this isn’t just an ordinary virus. The latest iteration of RedHook is highly sophisticated. It exploits the phone’s Wireless Android Debug Bridge (ADB) feature to access deep system functions—something most typical malware cannot do.

The attack usually begins with a convincing message sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or even fake phone calls, impersonating banks, telecom providers, or technical support. These messages include a link directing victims to a website that closely mimics the Google Play Store. When victims download and install a fake app (APK), the malware strikes.

Once installed, the app requests Accessibility permissions—permissions that seem harmless but actually grant the malware extensive control over the device. After obtaining this access, RedHook automatically enables Developer Options and activates Wireless ADB discreetly. From this point onward, attackers can monitor your screen in real-time, record keystrokes, unlock your device, and steal private data.

What makes this malware particularly alarming is its resilience. It employs advanced techniques to resist removal, making it significantly more difficult to eliminate than previous threats.

How to Stay Safe

* Experts recommend the following precautions:

* Only download apps from the official Google Play Store

* Avoid installing APK files from untrusted or unknown sources

* Exercise caution before granting Accessibility permissions to any app

* Disable “Unknown Sources” in your device settings

* Use app-based authentication tools instead of SMS codes for banking transactions

The RedHook attack illustrates how quickly Android threats are evolving and becoming more sophisticated. A single careless tap can compromise your device and finances. If your phone behaves abnormally or something feels suspicious, it’s best to get it checked immediately to prevent any potential loss.
