Maryam Nawaz unveils compensation plan for flood-affected families in Punjab

SARGODHA: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a comprehensive financial aid package for residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged in the recent flooding across the province.

While speaking at the launch event of electric buses in Sargodha, the CM revealed that families who lost their homes entirely due to flooding will be granted Rs1 million each for reconstruction. For those with partially damaged houses, Rs500,000 will be allocated to assist with repairs.

In addition to housing support, CM Maryam Nawaz also introduced compensation for livestock owners who suffered losses. Affected individuals will receive between Rs200,000 and Rs500,000 depending on the extent of the loss, with cheque distributions scheduled to begin within five days.

Detailing the scale of the disaster, the chief minister stated that floods had impacted 27 cities and over 5,000 villages. She noted that timely action by the provincial government prevented an even greater humanitarian tragedy.

“Prompt measures allowed the safe relocation of 2.5 million people to shelters, where they were provided with food and basic necessities,” she said. Maryam Nawaz also emphasized that efforts extended to the evacuation of livestock, safeguarding both lives and livelihoods.

The country is currently grappling with a massive flooding crisis in 2025, triggered by extreme monsoon weather, flash flooding, and glacial meltwater. Over 800 lives have been lost, and more than 1.2 million people have been affected nationwide. Economic damage could surpass $50 billion, with infrastructure, agriculture, and housing suffering major setbacks.

Earlier in August, CM Maryam Nawaz praised the collaborative work of emergency response agencies, administrative units, and the Pakistan Army, which she credited with conducting what she called the “largest rescue operation in Pakistan’s history.”

During a recent flood response briefing, she shared that more than 600,000 people and 450,000 livestock had been successfully evacuated to safer zones, amid record-breaking rainfall and cross-border floodwater inflows from India.
